Fighting Hunger One Bar at a Time

We believe that poverty is everyone’s problem, and our Maximized Living Foundation is doing something about it. The number of children living in poverty in Florida rose from 18 percent to 24 percent from 2008 to 2013 according to a report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s annual Kids Count Data Book, released in January 2015. This means that 969,000 children just in Central Florida, nearly 1 in 4, are living below poverty level, according to an article run by the Orlando Sentinel in January of 2015. To help this problem, Maximized Living co-founder, Dr. Ben Lerner joined efforts with Tampa-based Maximized Living chiropractor, Dr. Suzanne Demers to reach Tampa’s inner city youth at one of our outreach locations.  On behalf of the Foundation and Ebars, Lerner spoke to kids about healthy lifestyle and the two doctors donated several hundred Maximized Living Essential nutrition bars.

“It’s a remarkable fact that in a country with an overabundance of food and rampant obesity, there are still so many kids that go hungry,” Lerner said. “With literally millions of diet books out there, 1 in 4 children now suffer from a chronic, lifestyle related disease. It’s amazing how much the kids loved a wellness talk. There is still a whole lot of work to do, but it’s a solvable problem.”

The kids went wild when Lerner, 50, performed several handstand-style pushups to demonstrate how a healthy lifestyle can help you achieve whatever you want to in life.  In Lerner’s case, experiencing the heartbreak of having his parents pass away at a young age motivated him to learn as much as he could about real health for himself, his family, and eventually for the whole world through Maximized Living.

In fact, our entire network of doctors live by the words, “work hard, play hard, do good.” And while these words look great on a shirt, we believe it’s important to actually follow through on the things we say that we value. Through our Maximized Living Foundation, we do good things in the world by caring for those who desperately need it. The bars that Dr. Lerner gave out are not your average unhealthy, nutrient-deficient cereal bars. We believe that children who are in need should receive the very best nourishment that we can give them. Our Essential Bars contain high quality nutrition including maqui berry – the highest antioxidant berry in the world – and yacon syrup for regulation of sugar levels. They only contain four grams of sugar and are the highest certified bar in the US market: USDA Organic, Non-GMO, Gluten-free, Paleo, Vegan, and Kosher certified. They are also peanut-free, dairy-free, and grain-free.

“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.” Helen Keller

We may not be feeding the mouths on 969,000 in one go, but we fed the mouths of a couple hundred. If we all do our part, lives will change. Imagine that for a moment–how different the world will be if we each do our small part.
